Fish supper
I wasn’t the only one taking snaps of this monster that turned up on the fresh fish counter at my local Pão de Açucar supermarket. A fresh water fish from the Amazon, pirarucu was a few years back placed on a list of endangered foods from Brazil’s Slow Food movement. The enormous fish seem to be making a healthy comeback, on the menus at fast food joints like Yo! Temaki, and now here at my local supermarket. The fish can grow to up to 220kg, which at R$19.90 per kg, would set you back
over R$4,000, and would hopefully also feed five thousand.
