If your internet connection has been working even a little bit, you’ve opened any slightly hip magazine or visited this very website at all during the last month, you probably know all about the Montreal wonder known as Grimes. At some point during the whirlwind press cycle surrounding Visions, Boucher began her first real tour grind, and it seems she’s still learning the ropes a bit. “I’m having the technical problems of the fucking century here”, she told the audience at Clive Bar last night. It’s true— the sound on the vocals were off, volume levels were glitchy, and the speakers just cut out at one point toward the end of the set. “Fuck it, fuck it!” she kept muttering between lyrics, visibly (and audibly) agitated by the situation. It would have been a flat-out train wreck had Boucher not channeled that frustrated energy into a pretty dazzling display of dancing, keyboard and knob-twisting that redeemed some of the problems with the vocals.
Unexpected SXSW encounter: Passing Grimes in my hotel’s restaurant a few hours before her set
Number of mini-braids in ponytail: One
Show disclaimer: “I have a really sore throat so I’m going to be hitting really shitty high notes. Give me the benefit of the doubt, I didn’t sleep last night.”
Best-sounding song: ”Oblivion”
Most impressive physical feat: Boucher holding her mic between her ear and her shoulder (like a telephone) so she could use both hands to deal with the keyboard and other gear.
People in the audience who seemed bothered by the sound issues: About four
